Arranging a Funeral

Belsay Woodland Burials is here to help you arrange the burial of your choice, whether it be at the time of need or if you are planning in advance. We do not provide Funeral Director Services, but we can provide a list of local companies and we are happy to welcome any Funeral Director.  Likewise, we do not require that you use a Funeral Director, although most families do choose one to co-ordinate the funeral and bring the deceased to the Natural Burial Ground.  We can also provide you with a list of local celebrants.

We recommend that you visit Belsay Woodland Burials and let us show you round our beautiful site, so you can decide whether it is right for you.  At this point, you will need to decide whether you want to choose a full Burial or Interment of Ashes.

We must be in receipt of your statuatory paperwork and you will also need to complete our Burial Ground Application Form and the Notice of Interment Form.  You can request these forms from our office by emailing or by telephoning 01661 881 206, and return them to us once you have filled them in.  This paperwork is a legal requirement, and also helps you to clarify your plans for the burial so that we can help you achieve your wishes.

Sam The Pony

Sam, our resident pony, is available with his coffin cart to transport the deceased to the burial plot.  If you are interested in using his services, please contact the office to make arrangements.

Burials or interments are generally performed from Monday to Friday.  We allow plenty of time for families to spend time saying goodbye to their loved ones.  Usually a minimum of two clear working days notice is required to prepare a plot, however, we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.  Please do get in touch if you have any questions at all.

The Blacksmith’s Barn

We have all the facilities you need for an indoor ceremony and/or a reception for your guests before or after a burial.  The newly converted Blacksmith’s Barn can seat 100 people for a memorial service and has all the audio visual equipment you might need.  Our resident florist can also decorate the Barn for you with pedestal arrangements and/or table posies.

If you would like to arrange a reception after the burial, we can offer you a choice of three function rooms to accommodate your needs – from a standing reception for twenty to a sit down for 80-100.  We provide a buffet service which can include your choice of sandwiches, quiche, sausage rolls, mini pizzas, soup, scones, tray bakes and cake – all lovingly made by the ladies of the Blacksmith’s Coffee shop.  We also have an alcohol licence.
